Why I have a blog

Since I never seem to get around to sending out Christmas cards or letters, I decided to blog a bit to keep my fans updated. :-)

Best Children's books

For a nice list of children's books, check out the Six boxes of Books blog. It was a countdown done by an NYPL librarian. Six boxes kindly compiled the individual posts into a single list.

I have some reading to catch up on as there are 33 of them I either have not read or am not sure I have read. Definitely lots of favorites on that list.

What would you add to the list? I would add "Understood Betsy", but I'll bet most of you have never heard of that one. Oh, and "A Girl of the Limberlost". I'm sure I will think of others. I look forward to perusing your suggestions!

  1. I actually voted on that. Here's the list I dug out of my email:

    1. A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
    2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
    3. The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder
    4. Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild
    5. Gone-Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright
    6. Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
    7. Heidi by Joanna Spyri
    8. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
    9. My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
    10. Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh

Now that I look at it again, it's a bit girl-oriented, but then, I'm a girl!

I love your two suggestions. I was just thinking of getting out Limberlost again. It's been awhile. Recently I also read The Harvester by the same author, and I really enjoyed it.

  2. I would add a Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle book or two!

  3. I would add

    Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright
    Indian Captive by Lois Lenski
Goblins in the Castle by Bruce Coville
    Dr. Dolittle by Hugh Lofting

I second My Side of the Mountain as mentioned by Mrs. Mordecai, it's one of my all-time favorites, as well as Understood Betsy from HAH, love that one.

  4. I have most certainly heard of Understood Betsy! It's a true classic, not just a book that's called a classic because it's about an important historical period or something. Simple and sweet, that's what I like.
